DCTA to Break Ground on MedPark A-train Station - Press Release

For Immediate Release: April 1, 2009

DENTON, TX – On Friday, April 3rd at 2:00 p.m., the Denton County Transit Authority will break ground on the MedPark Station of the A-train rail line through Denton County.

The groundbreaking, which will take place at the DCTA property located at the intersection of MedPark and Colorado in Denton, continues the historic progress DCTA is making in its construction of the A-train line through Denton County.  This passenger rail system will connect Denton County with the DART system and the rest of the North Texas region, creating an economic development mechanism for Denton County and the region as a whole. Public parking for the event will be available at Sally Beauty at 3001 Colorado Blvd. A free shuttle will be provided to the site.

“I am proud and excited to see the realization of many years of hard work by those who have dedicated themselves to the vision of rail service in Denton County”, said Denton County Judge Mary Horn.

“I’m proud to have been a part of this momentous project for Denton County.  In these economic times, the A-train project will generate thousands of jobs for citizens of Denton County and create an economic development engine which will continue for decades,” said Charles Emery, DCTA Board Chairman and member of the RTC.

The A-train project, a central element of DCTA’s service plan includes single-phase construction of 21 miles of regional rail, five rail stations, a bicycle/pedestrian trail, and a regional rail operations and maintenance facility.  The immediate objective of the project is to have full service between Denton and Carrollton to interface with Dallas Area Rapid Transit’s light rail system by December 2010.  This timing will coincide with DART’s opening of the northern section of its Green Line and will complete a 50 mile segment of regional passenger rail that is detailed in the Mobility 2030 plan.
