DCTA To Break Ground on Hebron A-train Station - Press Release

For Immediate Release: March 24, 2009

LEWISVILLE, TX – On Friday, March 27th at 11:00 a.m., the Denton County Transit Authority will break ground on the Hebron Station of the A-Train rail line through Denton County.  The groundbreaking, at the 900 block of Lakeside Circle in Lewisville, is a historic event for Denton County and the first step in connecting Denton County with the rest of the North Texas region and the DART system via a regional rail system.

"Train travel was a big part of Lewisville’s deep historical roots, and through the DCTA, train travel will be a big part of Lewisville’s bright future. This is an exciting day for DCTA, the entire Lewisville community, and for me personally as we watch a far-reaching vision start becoming a reality that we all can enjoy,” said Gene Carey, Mayor of Lewisville.

“This is a monumental step for transit in North Texas.  Given the current transportation challenges, this moves us one step closer to the realization of implementing a multimodal solution for our region,” said Bill Hale, TxDOT district engineer.

“This is a historic day for Denton County and the North Texas region.  It marks the beginning of the fulfillment of a promise which we began in 2001 with the passage of legislation to create DCTA.  It was our vision then, and it continues to be today, to give our residents transportation options, which increase mobility and address air quality issues” said Charles Emery, DCTA Board Chairman and member of the RTC.

The A-train project, a central element of DCTA’s service plan includes single-phase construction of 21 miles of regional rail, five rail stations, a bicycle/pedestrian trail, and a regional rail operations and maintenance facility.  The immediate objective of the project is to have full service between Denton and Carrollton to interface with Dallas Area Rapid Transit’s light rail system by December 2010.  This timing will coincide with DART’s opening of the northern section of its Green Line and will complete a 50 mile segment of regional passenger rail that is detailed in the Mobility 2030 plan.
